So I Just Watched
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword Review
So I just watched King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. At least there's magic in this one.
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is the latest film from cockney Tarantino knockoff, Guy Ritchie. A guy who seems to think quick wit means talking fast. This time around King Arthur, played by Charlie Hunnam is a wise cracking street tough who has to rise up and overthrow the evil king, Jude Law.
This movie won me over really quickly, then lost me slowly over the course of the next two hours. I really enjoyed the opening parts of the movie. It opens with a grand scale battle with armies, magic, and giant elephants. The ODST trailer song starts playing and Eric Bana fights a wizard. It's great. Flash forward we spend some time with Arthur as he grows up in a whorehouse. There's an interrgoation scene ripped straight out of Snatch. It's a lot of fun.
But the movie never slows down. It alternates between crazy rapidly editied action scenes and crazy rapidly edited exposition scenes. The problem with that is that there's no where to go. Since the movie never settles down there's no way to escalate. By the time the evil king turns into the Soul of Cinder and Arthur fights him, no amount of rapid cuts and quick camera movements can excite the audience. It's just white noise.
Honestly I wish I could like this movie. There are a lot of really neat elements. I like the magic, the creatures, some of the dialogue is actually kinda funny, and Jude Law plays a pretty compelling villain. Unfortunately since none of these elements were given space to breathe they ended up getting smothered by the insane editing. I give King Arthur: Legend of the Sword 35 out of 86 giant snakes.
Stray Thoughts:
- Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey is really wooden. It's like the casting director mistook an accent for acting.
- I really wanted the syrens to sing "Poor Unfortunate Souls."
- I like Irish music.
