So I just watched Justice League. The darkest episode of Super Friends I've ever seen.
Justice League is not a good movie. The script is dumb. The production was plagued by issues resulting in two directors and cg upper lips. Not to mention, the villain is dark elf level generic.
So why do I like this movie? Something about this movie is more endearing than it should be. It reminds of The Mummy (1999) which is another movie that is super dumb, but also really entertaining. It’s not so bad it’s good, but it’s also not outright good. I think this movie is the definition of a popcorn movie. If you like Flash, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, or Aquaman and want to see a movie with them in it, it could be worse.
I’ve never been one to shit on Zack Snyder. I actually like some of his visual style. The biggest problem with Zack Snyder films are his scripts. Luckily Joss Whedon was able to punch it up with reshoots. Joss Whedon’s style has been copied a lot in recent years but real Whedon is still the best Whedon.
Some movies are greater than the sum of their parts. Justice League is firmly in that category. Thor Ragnorok is a significantly better movie in almost all respects, but I think I’m going to see Justice League again instead. I give Justice League 22 out of 31 distracting episodes of Rick and Morty.
Stray Thoughts:
- JK Simmons should be in more things.
- The lack of Steppenwolf in the soundtrack is disappointing.
- Composers need to stop sampling John Williams because it just highlights how poor their score is in comparison.
