Death Wish (2018) Review

So I just watched Death Wish (2018.) More like Dumb Wish.
Death Wish (2018) is the latest film from Eli Roth director of Clown and Hostel. A modern day take on the Charles Bronson film series of the same name, this time we get Bruce Willis as doctor turned vigilante Paul Kersey.
Looking at Death Wish (2018) as it stands against Death Wish (1974) you can see how the action genre has changed over the last 40 years. Death Wish (1974) is an uncomfortable movie. It's gritty and dark. The criminals are scary and intense. You understand why Bronson does what he does, but the movie doesn't take joy in it. It's exciting, but not necessarily fun.
Death Wish (2018) is a different beast entirely. The plot is lifted from Death Wish (1974,) but the tone is Death Wish 3. This movie doesn't want to make the audience uncomfortable, it just wants to get Bruce Willis killing as many criminals as possible. Everything feels clean and sterile. Even the attack on Willis' family cuts away before things to get too intense.
That's not to say I hated this movie. It was competently shot and acted. The script was cliched, but not to the point of eye rolling. It was just dumb. There was no point except action. If you take it for what it is, it's fine.
Death Wish (2018) isn't the controversial film that the original was, it's just an average shoot em' up. I give Death Wish (2018) 4 out of 11 hoodies.

Stray Thoughts:
  • As someone that works in radio I find it unrealistic that everyone seems to get their news of the vigilante through talk radio.
  • Eli Roth has a habit of taking good ideas and doing them the dumbest way possible.
  • That was the worst looking pizza I've ever seen in a movie.
