Avengers: Infinity War Review

So I just watched Avengers: Infinity War and I only cried for twenty minutes.
I'm one of the few defenders of the Justice League movie. I like it's cheesey dialogue. I even like Steppenwolf and aIl his evilness for the sake of evilness. I found it's simplicity kind of refreshing. Basically it's the highest budget Super Friends episode ever made. However watching Avengers: Infinity War I couldn't help but marvel at how much more effective Marvel's brand of long form storytelling is.
When I went into this movie I was suffering from super hero fatigue pretty hard. I liked Black Panther and Thor: Ragnarok just fine, but I definitely felt all the tropes wearing me down. It turns out that this movie was just the right kind of story to draw me back in.
First of all there are a lot of characters in this movie. At two and a half hours this movie does a decent job of dividing screentime amongst all the characters. No one felt under utilized. Sure some characters got more screentime than others, but I was actually very impressed with the movie's ability to juggle all of them effectively.
One of the benefits of such a grand scale story divided over so many different places is that the focus actually falls on the villain since he's the one tying it all together. In many ways Thanos is the protagonist of this story. He has more screentime than any individual hero. The movie follows his journey. After 6 years of teasing the character we finally see his motivations and his plan come to fruition.
Of course the real reason people see these movies is for the action. Right from the start the action never lets up. I was surprised by how varied it was. In particular I liked the way that Thanos used the reality stone to mess with his enemies. I also welcome Doctor Strange adding his brand of kaleidoscope craziness to any fight he's in.
None of the action means anything without real stakes. Infinity War wastes no time in establishing Thanos as a real threat. In a franchise that has had very few lasting deaths, it's impressive that I felt worried for every character throughout the movie.
Avengers: Infinity War is the culmination of ten years and eighteen movies worth of buildup. It had a lot to live up to and I'm glad to say it exceeded my expectations by a long shot. I give Avengers: Infinity War 74 out of 86 bubbles.

Stray Thoughts:
  • The fact that Robert Downey Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch talked several times throughout the movie and neither said "No shit, Sherlock" or some other Sherlock Holmes reference was very disappointing.
  • Teen Groot might be more annoying than baby Groot.
  • Peter Dinklage as a giant made me laugh out loud.
